Schau dich nicht mehr verstohlen um

Viel Gutes aus dem Ostblock hat die Mauerfall nicht überlebt, dafür etwas Schlechtes: die Stasi-Mentalität. Wegen ihr sind Deutsche heute nicht frei.

Frei ist, wer sich weder für seine Gedanken entschuldigen noch um den heißen Brei herumreden muss.

Auch lange vor politischer Korrektheit und der totalen Ausgrenzung kritischer Stimmen wurden Deutsche sorgfältig dressiert: Die inneren Alarmglocken läuten, wenn eine nicht systemkonforme Meinung näher rückt. Wer sich und seine wahre Meinung offenbart, schaut sich erst verstohlen um. Es zeichnet gerade den Deutschen aus.

Es wird allgemein angenommen, Spitzeln oder Sicherheitsbehörden würden alle Gespräche in Deutschland mitschneiden, bei denen es um etwas geht. Diese Vorstellung verfestigt Machtstrukturen. Übertriebene Vorsicht liegt in der Luft.

Dunkelheit kann dort nicht sein, wo Licht ist. Insbesondere die Jugend muss ihre Gedanken ausdrücken und die eigene Zukunft mitbestimmen. Sie müssen erkennen, dass diese Stasi-Mentalität echt ist, und dass sie falsch ist. Es ist Zeit für Mut in diesem Zeitalter der Verwirrung und Angst. Diese Mentalität ist künstlich und muss weg. Menschsein ist schwer genug, ohne dass man menschengemachte Minenfelder auf Zehenspitzen überqueren muss.

Schaust du dich erst verstohlen um? Nicht mehr.

Many good things from the Eastern states did not survive the fall of the Berlin Wall. One bad thing that did survive is the Stasi mentality. Because it did, Germans are not free today.

Freedom is when you don’t have to apologize for what you think, or walk on eggs when you speak.

Even long before political correctness and the cancel culture, Germans have been carefully trained: Internal alarm bells go off every time they get too near an opinion that doesn’t fit the establishment’s narrative. The glance over the shoulder can be seen any time someone shares his true opinion—his heart. It is a hallmark of being German.

The assumption that any meeting where real issues are to be discussed within Germany is likely to be monitored by undercover police or security services is well known and useful to maintain control. Excessive caution is in the air.

Darkness cannot exist where there is light. Young people especially need to express their thoughts and be involved in their own future. They need to acknowledge that this Stasi mentality is real, and that it is wrong. It is time for courage in this age of confusion and fear. This is an artificial mentality: it needs to go. Being human is hard enough without tip-toeing through manmade minefields.
